City officials in Midlothian, a fast-growing city in Texas, knew that accurate, efficient monitoring of its 12 pump stations was critical to keeping its water infrastructure running smoothly. To improve the functionality and efficiency of its pump monitoring capabilities, the city added RACO’s AlarmAgent.com, a wireless, web-based system that provides on-demand pump monitoring and alarm detection for water and wastewater treatment plants.

Now, plant personnel can monitor flow rates, start rates, water levels and more to ensure that pumps are operating at their best. AlarmAgent.com also notifies plant operators of any pump inefficiencies before serious damage or back-ups can occur.

The system already has proved valuable. Recently, a maintenance worker was notified of a pump inefficiency. Upon investigation, he discovered the pump was clogged with a mop head, but because of the quick notification, he was able resolve the problem before any major issues could occur.

AlarmAgent.com has helped maintenance personnel keep the pumps performing at their highest efficiency, which saves the city money and reduces energy use. Midlothian officials plan to continue using AlarmAgent.com in the future—city regulations now require any new pump stations to use AlarmAgent.com to ensure that all pumps perform ideally.

Tip of the Month: Sensor Wires

The distance a sensor wire can run between an alarm autodialer and its contacts depends on two factors: the alarm autodialer model and wire size. Generally, the smaller the wire’s gauge, the shorter it can run. Take the Verbatim model, for example. With this system, an 18-gauge wire allows 33 miles between the alarm autodialer and contact, but go down to 20-gauge, and the distance drops to 20 miles. A RACO Catalyst remote telemetry unit (RTU)  is an ideal companion to a Hach Water Distribution Panel (WDP). With the right hardware and RACO Alarmware software, plus some easy-to-follow instructions, setting up the system is easy. Required Equipment A Hach WDP/Catalyst system involves connecting a Hach Mod I/O (#598000) to the WDP through an Aquatrend network cable (#5215700).
